Warning: This post contains a lot of I’s (link).
All day long I am consuming, producing, connecting, engaging, learning and planning. But I realized just now that I write at night.
It dawned (for lack of a better term) on me that it’s now, in the still of the night (and yes, it gets still even in Tucson) that my mind starts to finally come alive.
I’m not really a night owl
I wish that my mind didn’t come alive at night, actually. I am tired and want to go to sleep. At the same time, I know that if I don’t do this now, it will never happen. My brain is constantly processing a backlog of tasks, events, and reminders and this one would get filed so far behind that I would probably not remember it until 2020.
So what ends up happening: I find my pen, open my notebook and start jotting things down. Then I pump out a post or two and hit ‘Save Draft.’ While my best ideas come at night, I wouldn’t necessarily say that my best writing happens at night.
I prefer not to actually publish anything at night, although last night (which was just a couple of hours ago now) I hit Publish on the Common Sense Blogging: Don’t Stress Over Stats post, and, well, there she goes.
I simply prefer to publish in the morning since I hook up my posts to Twitter and like to get in the stream when there’s a lot of activity going on (useful Twitter tip).
Howl at the moon
Why does my mind turn on when the sun goes down? It probably has something to do with the environment – the lighting, the closed curtains, and the silence (I never have TV or music or anything on when I am at my computer). Perhaps it’s the rush – and the haste – because I want to make every minute count and get to bed ASAP.
Usually my intention is to just soak and observe, and make a few tweaks here and there before nodding off. Instead, I re-arrange the blog layout, sign up for new social media accounts and draft blog posts! ![]()
What about you? When do your post ideas come to you? When do you write?

P.S. So of course this song is playing in my head right now. Gotta luv the way the brain works.
