Two Cents Tuesday: Is Video Blogging the Key to Success?

Update: I have been bizzzzzzy! In a couple of days I’ll update you guys on the blogs I’ve been working on for clients. It’s been keeping me pretty tied up. PLUS, I just launched a brand new side business called Tucson For Sale By Owner, which I’m very excited about as it allows me to put both feet in my favorite worlds: real estate and Internet.

A few weeks ago I decided to start a new series, since the Common Sense Blogging series is almost over. Two Cents Tuesdays. I’m actually going to be timing myself; I’d like to keep the posts short and sweet and get them out in ten minutes or less. As you know, I am never at a loss for words, so that’s going to be quite a challenge!

Two Cents Tuesday: Is Video the Key to Success?

Take a look around my blog. What is missing?

V-I-D-E-O, V-I-D-E-O, V-I-D-E-O and Bingo was his name-o.

Yes, Video is missing. I do not record videos. I have a couple of times, and it makes me want to vomit. I really do not like to look at myself on video. My skin goes all green looking and I’d have to layer on tons of makeup just to look like my normal self, which is almost always makeup-free.

Take a picture of me any day! I LOVE taking pictures. I do not like video.

Why am I saying all of this? Well, because, it seems like I’m neglecting a huge, powerful way to really connect with readers. Not only that, YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the WORLD. To add to that, BizChickBlogs is about bringing you the tools and skills you need to become successful at blogging.

Two Shining Examples

Check out this video recorded by Kim Roach (I would have embedded it if I could). She’s an internet marketer who recently just recorded her first live video and she talks to her audience about why she feels it’s important.

Many of you know Chris Brogan. I happen to really like his video style. This, as with the Kim Roach example above, is not over-produced. The lighting is not perfect. The recording environment is so-so. In a way, the “fancy” stuff is so downplayed that you as a viewer are forced to just listen and understand what they’re saying.

To answer my own question, no, I don’t think video is necessarily the key to success at blogging. I do, however, think it makes a world of difference.

  1. Videos of the blogger, either capturing just a voice, or capturing the blogger’s face and emotions, helps readers connect with the blogger and also invokes a feeling of trust.
  2. Video is moving picture. In the same way that television and the Silver Screen has captured audiences worldwide, it is simply an amazing way to “say” what you mean to say without saying it.
  3. Like Kim Roach mentioned in her blog post linked to above, for some of us, recording a personal video forces us to break out of our comfort zones.

And perhaps this is the message that’s the most essential: to achieve success greater than what you have experienced up to this point, you must learn to push the boundaries. If video is a boundary, it must be pushed. For me, this pushes me out of my comfort zone but perhaps that is essential to continued growth.

What’s Your Two Cents Worth?

Thoughts? Do you use video? If so, link to where your video is here so we can see some great examples to follow.

I feel you completely on this one, Tia! I HATE seeing myself on video, however I think it's an opportunity that I don't want to ignore.

I do a lot of tutorial videos and some tv review videos on my YouTube channel. As such, I'm not in the video itself, I simply record my screen. That doesn't help with the fact that I hate the sound of my voice though :)

Anyway, I picked up the "Rapid Video Blogging" e-book from Gideon Shalwick and I thought it did a pretty good job of laying out the fundamentals. You don't have to have a $25,000 setup to have success.

http://gideonshalwick.com/

(beware, this is one of those sites where his ebook pop-up comes up right away -annoying but harmless)

Anyway, my sister uses the (frankly horrible) video capture on an old digital camera I gave her 5 years ago and she has almost 400 subscribers to her channel. She has awful lighting, too, but the people care more about WHAT she says rather than how the set looks.

I'm actually making some headway in the video area. I'm seeing some traffic coming from my YouTube videos although actual *subscribers* are still very low. I think there's a lot of potential here and I've got a system in place that seems to be working (albeit slowly).

My YouTube Channel is here:

Anyway, I'll look forward to seeing your video endeavors, Tia. Peace!

Video blogging is very common these days found in various internet marketing guru's blog for visual internet marketing coaching its proven method for successful in internet marketing. :)

videos are the most effective way to reach a large audience with similar interest. Moreoever , people like watching videos over reading text ..

they say youtube videos bring a lot of traffic , im yet to start doing my own. I thinki will go first with short ones using camtasia ,

Hello Tia, great post. In my opinion video blogging is not the key but the additional tool that is able to make the website/blog more interactive and 'alive'. We all know that people love to watch something and get the information in the video format instead of reading some plain and boring pages of text. + videos make the blogger closer to the targeted audience.
In any way, great post and keep it up!

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks! I have to say that I'm still divided on using video on bizchickblogs.com but I'm 100% sold on using it for future blogging endeavors. Thanks for commenting!

I think video is the way to go because it allows you to show off yourself, your voice and your mannerisms which really allow people to see who you are and connect with you.

One reason why I love video and audiobooks are the tiny things that you don't get with writing - laughs, puns and tone of voice. Seeing goes a long way, I think video (being how easy it is to record and edit in this age) will be a huge mover in blogging.

It totally depends on how unique the video is actually. Not just any video will get you traffic.

Video blogging for me if for blogs whose reader have access to broadband and that's why I dislike tutorials in video format. Text and images work just fine for majority of folks worldwide. Ever tried watching a video on dial-up/EDGE connection? It's excruciatingly painful!

I think you hit the salient point by pointing out YouTube's largeness - it is the world's second largest search engine - and what we know of YouTube culture. Just like flipping channels, people go out of their way to search for things to watch. They don't seem quite as compulsive with things to read.

Still, I thought briefly video blogging was for me, and I don't think that any more. It may get more attention, but conversions or influence isn't even the same thing as attention, not even close. Ultimately, one has to know why one creates content in the first place. I can't think of a video blogger I've seen that has had something to say that's stayed with me.

Wow! Interesting insight. I really think it is a point of clarification about video blogging. I don't know that I would do it where it's just me talking about something. But if I was giving a how-to lesson or a tutorial, I can certainly see the value in that.

Certainly. I'll add this - I don't think YouTube or video is a fad. But just like television and the radio, these are things which have a fan base more prone to fads. Building a solid audience probably means getting people who have the patience to read one's stuff over a period of time.

Video is great and all but you have to keep in mind a couple of things. Some people just don't want to load video. Others don't want to un-mute their computer to hear whats going on because it would inconvenience others in the room or they are watching tv while surfing. Maybe they are at work and video will give it away that they aren't working. From my point of view, people like to read. That will never die out. Adding video is cool sometimes though and attracts some viewers that you didn't have before.
My recent post Why spamming makes you work harder than engaging

Thanks, Brandon! All good points. I think going totally video isn't right for some people, but then again, I have seen some people create online TV channels that work really well. There are folks who do prefer to watch than read.

The nice thing about computers is that they are built for multi-media! And video certainly has merits - how to's and tutorials, for example. It's always good to have a text version. I'm one of those people who prefers my instructions in writing but I will settle for video if that's all there is.

Uploading video (blogs) are a great way to gain extra traffic if you post it on youtube alot of people with flow to your site to hear or learn more of what you have to share.

Hi Dana! Thanks! I agree. I think video is a great tool for increasing depth and mass exposure (if promoted on YouTube and allowed to be embedded) but written word will continue to be incredibly powerful.

As a technology blogger I use Video Demonstrations and Tutorials to showcase product reviews and technology, they say a picture is worth 1000 words, well a video can be worth more than that. However, Video will not replace written articles for SEO and Search Engines, so I always write my post and add a video to it after the fact, I make sure my posts can fully sustain themselves as if they didn't have a video and then add the video toward the top for the people who would rather watch than read.

Hey there! That's a great strategy and when I start doing video (probably not for this blog but for another) I'll do the same. I like that. Good advice.

Hi Tia,
Thanks for your post. Just came over to your blog from Cori's post at BigGirlBranding.

I haven't used video as yet on my site. Just haven't got round to it. However, I do plan on putting up some video in the coming months of me at some presenting gigs. I believe it will help and add depth but still not convinced about the DIY aspect yet.

My recent post Why Do Your Customers Buy From You?

That's a really good point - to DIY or not to DIY. DIY seems to be working. I think ultimately people want to see you and hear what you have to say. Going the produced route could go horribly wrong (think automotive sales industry; they just never get it right). At least if it's DIY the only thing you can really screw up is your content, and that's the most important thing anyway.

I think video is fabulous . . . . for some bloggers. Let's face it, we all have our strengths and there's no-one-size-fits-all formula for blogging success. Some people have a great writing style, and that's why I visit their blogs. Others motivate me with punchy videos. I don't do video but probably will add it to the mix down the line. Meanwhile, back to writing . . .

Hey Jean. Couldn't have said it better. It's certainly not for everyone. I think for me it'll be an exercise in trying something new - like new foods. You never know how your readers will react until you do. It could be an explosion of new influence. Who knows? B)

Thanks for adding your two cents!

Thanks for the post. I checked out Kim Roach’s video and I enjoyed watching her in the “1st” video that she’s ever posted. It’s going to help me gain the confidence that I I need to “go outside my comfort zone”

Awesome!! I'm glad you found inspiration in it. I did, too. :)

Just FYI! The Embed video doesn't seem to want to work, so just add the link to your video here. If you add the html, you can get yourself a keyword anchor link, so do it!

HI I have been trying to show the power of videos for a blog's success. My results so far great. If you look on to my blog, you will know it.

Thanks! I will definitely check it out this time paying close attention to video.

Hi Tia,
Very interesting! I think video is good to add to a blog, but video making isn't for everyone. It does allow the reader a way to connect. With that being said, I do videos, but when I first started I was a wreck. I learned to just be myself and to show people that I'm not perfect..I'm me. I throw in a few videos here and there on my blog, but I don't like to fill my blog with videos. I still love written word! :)

Here is one of my popular videos...I thought it was awful (I was just acting silly..being myself, but sharing helpful information), but I think it has been very helpful.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtbGnaT1Hh4
