Top Web Hosting Companies for Blogs

One of the things people ask me all of the time is where to buy web hosting for their new blogs. In a massive sea of web hosting companies, how do you choose the right one?

I have been developing websites since 2001 when I was still in college. Back then, I used a company called MyHosting, which I believe still exists. I switched to SiteGround and was a loyal customer of theirs for about 3 years until I realized that their prices were crazy high (since then, they have reduced costs).

The list of web hosts below is comprised of both US and UK based web hosts, as some of my clients are located in the UK and I’ve had much experience dealing with different companies  located there.

I’ve left some details out intentionally, such as disk space or unlimited domains, because most of the web hosts these days are so similar in terms of what they are offering that the only real difference is customer service. How they treat you as a customer or webmaster is essential. Don’t overlook it.

This list reflects my personal opinion only, and that these are not paid reviews although for a couple I have used affiliate tracking links.

BizChickBlogs’ Recommended Web Hosting Companies

#1 HostGator

Customer Service: 5 Stars

Control Panel: 5 Stars (cPanel)

Cost: 5 Stars

Reputation: High

WordPress Setup Wizard: Yes

I have flip-flopped many times on HostGator, and used their shared hosting service as well as their virtual private server service. As for customer service for shared hosting, I truly believe they cannot be beat. Their reps are thorough, kind, and never condescending.

At the current moment, cost for hosting with them is $7.95/month for the baby plan, which is the one I would recommend. You need to pay upfront for the year (like many hosting plans).

bluehost review#2 BlueHost

Customer Service: 3 Stars

Control Panel: 5 Stars (cPanel)

Cost: 5 Stars

Reputation: Medium-High

Uptime: Getting Better

WordPress Setup Wizard: Yes

6 months ago, I would have ranked BlueHost above HostGator for customer service, but ever since they blew up in popularity, they have been going down the slippery slope of “I’m the king of web hosts now, and don’t have time to address your measely issue. Use the Knowledge Base.”

I have referred a number of clients to them and wish to keep them as my personal host, but the ice is getting very thin. Right now, their customer service is a major FAIL and needs to be improved. When I first joined BlueHost, they were the best deal out there, but now that the other companies are offering essentially the same packages, BlueHost will need to work on improving customer service and give us a reason to stay.

Their affiliate program’s customer service program, on the other hand, is top-notch, and if you ever have a problem they actually have a real guy you can call to get it sorted. Very cool.

A few months ago, they had several issues with sites being down due to server upgrades. Looks like they have resolved that and it’s back to being the supreme technical host it always was.

Cost is low, at $6.95/month if you sign up for the entire year.

tsohost review#3 TsoHost (United Kingdom)

Customer Service: 5 Stars (more like 10 stars)

Control Panel: 5 Stars (Proprietary)

Cost: 4 Stars for traditional shared hosting

Reputation: High

Uptime: Always Up

WordPress Setup Wizard: No

My experience with TsoHost is limited to their very cool clustered, load-balanced shared hosting, or “cloud hosting” as they call it. Although the control panel is not cPanel as many of us are used to, it is incredibly easy to use. Think about what you use in cPanel – maybe 4 things? Maybe 3? TsoHost’s control panel just simplifies things so that you can get to where you want: domains, email, FTP, and databases.

Although they don’t have a WordPress setup wizard, setting up WordPress is easy. But if you need help, let me know.

Their customer service is top-notch. When you call, you get to talk to a real person (gasp!) and they won’t make you go through hoops to get an easy answer. This is a must for me since I do so much technical support for clients and am not always ready to answer security questions like, “what did you have for breakfast yesterday?”

If you are located in the UK and need to host a .co.uk site, use TsoHost.

westhost review#4 WestHost

Customer Service: 5 Stars (more like 10 stars)

Control Panel: 5 Stars (cPanel)

Cost: 5 stars

Reputation: Not as well known as BlueHost or HostGator

Uptime: Always Up

WordPress Setup Wizard: Yes

WestHost is a very cool company (and they will interact with you on Twitter, too). My experience with WestHost is limited to WordPress blogs, and the experience was some time ago, so this review will be a little lighter than the others.

When you’re building blogs for others, customer service is key. Often times, people forget passwords, don’t have FTP information, or have had a catastrophe of some kind. I was impressed with WestHost to the point that I still remember it almost 2 years later. Good for them. :)

Preferred Hosting with them is $8/month and if you were a client, that’s the plan I would suggest for you. They do have a plan at $4/month but you can only host one domain on it. That’s fine if you only ever plan to have one website.

More Recommendations?

As always, I’d love to hear from you and I’m sure other people would, too. If you have experience with any of the above web hosting companies, please leave a reply detailing it! Also, if you have other hosts that you like and recommend, let us know about them. Thanks!

I use Host Gator (having moved from imhosted.com) and continue to be floored by their incredible customer service. It's like working with a highly knowledgeable, selfless friend. They've been fantastic and I will remain their loyal customer.

This is great. I love to read blogs, so link building isn’t a chore for me. It would be great for everyone if we all used kw luv and do follow. They can be hard to find and a lot of webmasters will delete your comment if you add a kw instead of your name.

Yeah, I wouldn't leave a keyword as a name unless the blog specifically said it is keywordluv.

That said, it's always good to still leave your name. Even some keywordluv blogs will delete your comment if you don't. I prefer to have a name instead of, "hello language translation services!" :) Just has a better ring to it.

I m very happy with Hostgator i give 5 star to it for excellent tech support.

take another example , my site wordpressinstall.org thats still on hostgator , which i will be shifting later this month is hosted with 175 other websites .... so thats clearly overselling. hostgator oversells badly

well i dont want to target someone , but for an example , lets take kok's treatgene which is hosted on hostgator .

its hosted with 96 other websites

one more thing , i will Tia to add on the blog post , about what is overselling and how to find if a host is overselling. Before buying hosting , just ask you webhost for an website hosted in their space .

Now go here :http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/web-sites-on-web...

and do a reverse ip lookup to fine how many websites hosted in one place .

Bizchickblogs shares her space and ip with 21 other blogs ... quite average ... thats good .Now try Hostgator and you will be amazed :P .... i hope to her some views on my comment here ...

Hi Sourish, that's really interesting. Well, I have about 20 other sites hosted on my shared account so that sounds about right.

Are you saying that Hostgator oversells? I am curious about that.

i had to move to VPS earlier this week for better services , and guess what , the traffic still got my server crash , and i have to get more resources ..

I had a VPS service with HostGator and would say that the customer service wasn't so great. Turns out it was an issue with WPMU, but still, they took hours and hours to respond to me when my site was down. I had already moved it and had it up and running again on BlueHost by the time they actually got back to me!!! That's how long they took.

these are all good shared hosting , but when you traffic increasing nothing can give good performance

Hi Tia! I'm using Hostgator too. The service is so good and stable. I love Hostgator's support too. The support is great and efficient. I think Hostgator will be my first choice of web hosting.

@ kok
Hostgator support is good no doubt about that , but what happens here is , your database will go whiteout , means all posts gone. The nest day you login and see , no posts on the homepage . i had this 3-4 times , luckily i backup every other day ...

In that list the best is the HostGator as you've said. But i would another one to that list, that's Site5. The price is very similar with HostGator but i think the service is better!

Regards

Hi Tia,
I've only used Host Gator, and so far so good. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jake - Will do! Thanks for stopping by. Very cool.

You're welcome...

BTW did you go to Affiliate Summit East in NYC? You look familiar, wondering if I met you there. :)

nice listings... but i have not used anyone of these though..

i like znetindia & name.com blog hosting..

Thanks, Ashish. I will have to look into those!

I started with znet , they are quite responsible , and if you are low on resources [fewer plugins] this webhost is recommended . Znet is a reseller based in India with servers in US ... they dont oversell .

I agree that HostGator is the best! I use them and have the baby plan... I had an issue once when i changed credit cards and forgot to fix it on the hosting plan so my site went down. I e-mailed them and it was fixed and back up within 15 minutes. That is some amazing customer service right there!!!

Right. And it's so funny, but customer service makes the world of difference. It is the one thing everyone will remember no matter what.

I am still very new to the business. I have heard some pretty bad stories about some hosting sites. None of these are on the bad list so, I will have to put them on my backup list. I really love this kind of work. I hope to get my sites to where they will pay all my bills. Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Judy, you're welcome. Yes, I would be really surprised if any of these were on the bad list but BlueHost is getting close.

I have used a number of different hosts (still do) including two big ones - Hostgator and Godaddy.com. I started using Hostgator when I got serious about internet marketing. A friend in the business recommended them when I was having website issues with certain software I wanted to run.

In my opinion, they are hands down the best company to host with regardless of whether or not you are an internet marketer. You will experience very few problems, if any at all. You will realize that every script you try to install just plain works when you are using Hostgator. They actually take the time to take care of the little details so that when you decide to implement some new funky software on your website, it works without a hitch. That my friends is a 100% honest testimonial.

If you run multiple websites, my advice would be to get a Hostgator reseller account. Twenty something per month with unlimited domains & unlimited email. (I think) You can host a boatload of niche sites on one reseller account.

Thanks, Kathy. I feel exactly the same way about HostGator but can't say the same with GoDaddy. I stopped hosting with them about a year ago and never looked back. The specific issues that drove me over the edge with them were database corruption, which caused Wordpress password reset functionality to fail. It was very annoying.

I suppose it is throwing the baby out with the bathwater, but Kristi over at Kikolani.com write a recent(ish) post on GoDaddy Wordpress security problems. I can't speak to that since I don't host with them anymore, but I'll include it here in case anyone wants to take a look at it:

http://kikolani.com/fetching-friday-resources-dofo...

After re-reading my comment, I feel the need to clarify my statement.

I would not recommend hosting with Godaddy.

I would highly recommend hosting with Hostgator.

Ha! OK. Same here. :)

I've heard really good things about hostgator, so they would probably be my first choice. The others I haven't heard a lot about.
