I'm making use of comment redirect @ the moment so as to increase the number of subscribers to my blog. I'll take the hint and add a freebie to it as well ;-)
thanks , that is exactly the plugin i was looking for . at the moment i got some real loyal readers . This will be useful. I have crossed 100+ comments wuth just 25 - 30 blog posts ...
I was just getting ready to go on a hunt for your Comment Redirect plugin. I first saw that on another blog I read a while back and downloaded it, somewhere in the mix I never added it to my blog. Great reminder and THANK YOU.
These are some very interesting points. I would consider myself as a passive reader because I love to read what everyone else thinks about what was said. I will try these plug ins and see how they work out for me. You always have a real look at life on the computer.
Tia, I like you idea of featuring a blog visitor's question as a 'teachable moment.' What a great way to both create relevant content, but make the visitor feel special. ;-)
In reading the comments for this post, I learned that I should keep an eye on the number of plugins I install. (I *loves* me a cool plugin.) It never occurred to me that this could impact my blog's load time.
Thanks again
I'm glad I followed a link here. I have been looking for Thank Me Later, having received an email, but had no idea what it was. I was trying to figure out if it was a plugin or "by hand."
Hey Rick!
Glad you found the blog, too. I just updated the post with a link to download the .zip file for Thank Me Later as people were saying they were unable to install it from Wordpress Codex. Cheers,
Tia
hello again Tia...yes please assistance would be so very much appreciated. i am anxious to post Thank Me Later on my 3 blog sites and can't connect.
would appreciate the updated .zip file.
Soooz
Hey Soooz,
I just updated the post to include a link to download the .zip file. It's toward the bottom. Enjoy!
Tia, again an enormously helpful clued up and motivating blog. I am about to set up the plug ins on my brand new blogsite.
My thanks again.
Soooz
Hi Suzannah! I'm so happy to hear that you like the blog. Someone earlier was having trouble installing Thank Me Later so if for some reason you have trouble also, let me know and I will update this post with the .zip file.
I've received the Thank Me Later email, nice plug-in. I haven't at blogger.
Technology can help by human nature is clear engage genuinely with other bloggers and as you said "dropped off the radar" those bloggers that ignore you - this is why I'm constantly - adjusting my RSS readers- LOL!
Cheers,
Gera
Hello my friend!
Ugh; I know the feeling. I really need to clean out my Google Reader. Too many cobwebs up in there!
Glad you like Thank Me Later!
Hey Tia this is great Plugin. It will really makes sense when users come again and again. Great tool and application to make online relationships with reader. First commentators is always precious. It like relation between customer and shopkeeper. I am new in this field. I will be following your post to know something more from you. Good post. Thanks.
This an awesome plugin to encourage first time commentators after all comments are the life blood for blogs. We need to encourage more and more commentators to increase the blog readership. What do you say Tia?
Hi Imran,
Nice to see you here again. I agree 100%. Of course it depends on the purpose of the blog, but most blogs are set up for communication in that way.
hello Tia!
Well revealed article about importance of First time commentators. But regarding this Im having small issue, instead of saying first time commentators, it would be better if you have considered them as converted addictive readers, since We need to make every visitor into our Fixed and returning visitor.
But It was really a well compiled article and thnx for revealing the Plugins that you use.
Cheers!
Hi Tia, thanks for sharing these two plug-ins! I'd like to install Thank Me Later, but the download link on wordpress.org (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/thank-me-later...) doesn't seem to work, and when I try to install Thank Me Later by searching for it and clicking Install in my blog's admin panel, I get a message saying the plug in could not be installed. Do you know why the plug in doesn't seem to be available? Do you have any suggestions on where else I can go to download it? Your post sold me on the idea of using this plug in, now if I could only install it... :) thank you!
Hey Libby, I was able to install it searching for "Thank Me Later," using the plugin search. Can you try that way again?
Thanks for replying, I tried it again and I get a message saying that the folder for that plug in has already been created. I think this might be because I started to install it and navigated away from the page accidentally, then went back to try it again and now it won't work, maybe since it is partially installed or something? I will keep trying to figure it out, seems like a great plug in to use. Again - thanks for your help!
You know, I went to download another plugin from the Codex today and couldn't do it, either. They must have something messed up. If you need it, I can .zip it for you and email it to you. Just let me know. Also, you can go in via FTP and take out that directory if it's still in there.
Hi again Tia, if you don't mind - would you be able to email me the zip file? i would really appreciate it, but I can totally understand if not... either way - thanks!
Hmm, some good tools there. I might have to incorporate the Thank Me Later plugin. One would hope that first time commentors take the time to subscribe or bookmark your blog but it never hurts to nudge them in the right direction LOL.
Hey Wayne,
I use the Thank Me Later plugin to just let people know that I love to connect and hope to see them back. I think I might mention the feed and stuff but no links to it. Just good old fashioned networking.
Thanks for the two plugins. Looks like I'll have to spend some time adding these to my blogs this weekend.
More great advice Tia. Isn't it wonderful how when people ask you questions you can create a super awesome post from it? Chances are that if this one person is interested in the answer, then there are a whole bunch of other people who are also interested that just never said anything.
Both of those plugins are top notch advice on how to engage and develop better rapport with your visitors.
Thanks, Kathy! Yes! I love getting questions and using them as post ideas. In terms of helping out readers, it doesn't get any more helpful than that! I used to have a form right in the sidebar to take questions. I think I'll bring that back. It worked well.
Thanks for your comment and I am dying to read the post in your CommentLuv field.
Thanks for writing about these useful plugins, Tia. Even I was thinking of some way to turn my precious first commenters into regular commenters. I was considering the Comment Redirect plugin...now I think I will install both of these. But I will also have to keep the number of plugins used in mind.

Two Must-Have Plugins to Make the Most of First Time Comments
Tweet
This post is in response to a question by Evelyn Bourne, who had just left her first comment on this blog. She asked what plugins I was using in relation to reader comments. This is my long-a** answer to that question. Thank you, Evelyn! Have a question??
Authored by a freelance writing mom, 'A Productive Pen' is a blog about online writing, marketing and personal development.
First-time comments are precious. Once a reader goes from being passive to being active, you have just been presented with a golden opportunity to turn a stranger into a reader for life.

Active Readers vs. Passive Readers
Every blog has four types of readers at different points in the funnel:
If you’re too busy to notice, he/she may never ask again. It depends on how hot good-of-a-blogger you are, right?
Thing is, the funnel is actually more like a two way street with several opportunities for U-turns. A passive reader who leaves a comment can just as easily go back to being the wallflower, and then eventually leave. Again, it depends on how hot good-of-a-blogger you are (just kidding).
There were blogs that I circled and commented on and tweeted several months ago that, today, I don’t even visit! I don’t even open the RSS in my Google Reader. They have completely dropped off the radar and are now simply old relics, replaced by a circle of bloggers whom I’d now consider friends. The common trait in the ones I no longer visit? The bloggers have never, ever responded to a comment I’ve left or acknowledged a retweet. Human nature: we’d rather hang with our friends (well, most of us would).

Investing in First Time Comments
It takes somewhere around 9 impressions to convince a stranger that they should get what you’re giving. But a repeat buyer will buy again with far less effort. To me, there is something to be said about the exchange – the fact that it costs you something and it costs them something – that makes the active reader that much more valuable. It costs you great content and high-quality: without it, you won’t get the comment in the first place. And it costs them time, a name, and an email address, something very few people like to expose. At this point, they have “purchased” from you. Now what will you do?
There are two great plugins which take this engagement – this investment in first time comments – to another level.
Comment Redirect
I’m a huge fan of this plugin. Comment Redirect will redirect readers who leave comments for the first time to a page that you choose. Ideally, this will be a page thanking them, presenting an opportunity to subscribe, giving them something, or pointing them to more posts.
Thank Me Later
I’m an even bigger fan of this plugin, as I’ve now received a handful of responses saying that it’s awesome to receive a follow-up to a comment left. Thank Me Later sends a message to people who leave a comment. It can be whatever message you want and you can send it whenever you want – right away, a day later, a week later, etc. You can choose to send one message or multiple messages. I set it up to just send one message – ever – because I believe in the golden rule and I personally do not like to get tons of unsolicited emails. This plugin complies with CAN-SPAM and offers an opt-out feature which you will want to take advantage of. Make sure to copy the opt-out link directly into the thank you email so that people who really do not want to hear from you via email won’t have to fear that more is headed their way.
The ways in which you could use these two plugins together are endless. You can always take the active readers a step further and invite them at this point (now that they’ve left a comment) to get on your list for something better, or suggest some resources they might like.
UPDATE: Several people said they couldn’t install this via the WordPress Codex. So, if you’d like it, you may download the zip file here. Enjoy!
