Are You Ignoring the Best Source of Content Ideas?

This is part 3 in a 5-part series on Successful Blogging.

What Makes Content Valuable?

The other day I was checking out Ana Hoffman’s Traffic Generation Cafe site, and one of the comments she received was something many bloggers in this niche hope to hear. He said that there is a difference between informative and usable content, and he was happy that she consistently provided usable content.

Now, I’m well aware that all sorts of content can be considered valuable – something that makes people laugh can be very valuable, or news, or an announcement.

The thing to pay close attention to in that story is the part that said, “one of the comments she received.”

If you’re struggling to find content ideas, or worried that your low response/reaction rate is because you’re not quite sure what people want, start navigating the comments.

I do that all of the time; most of my topics begin with an idea I got from a comment on my own blog or someone else’s.

If you learn to listen to, and not just read, what people are saying, you will realize that there is never a shortage of important things to talk about.

If you don’t have any comments of your own…

If you’re just starting out, and you have no comments of your own, start perusing the comments on blogs that are similar to yours. Answer those questions on your blog – maybe even specifically state that you read that someone was asking about the issue on a blog (and link to that post/comment).

Value Translates into Importance

Ideally, the value your blog brings to a reader’s life will translate into importance, and that is the sweet spot. That is when your brand takes on a whole different level of meaning, and begins to become more of a fixture in someone’s life rather than a “neat thing that they like.” Consider what has happened to PBS. The value PBS brings to people – especially children, in the mornings – has actually translated into importance, such that people will choose to support what is free by sending money to ensure that it never goes away.

So if you’re looking to consistently bring value – I mean every time you post – start by figuring out exactly what people want to know, and a very good place to find gems like that is through the comments.

And once you’ve written this highly-valuable post, don’t forget critical search engine optimization. If one person out there is talking about it, you can bet others are, too, and you want to be in the mix when people go searching for it.

Who Does It Right? Leave the link.

Know of a blogger or a blog that is consistently providing valuable content? Leave a link to their site in the comments. It’s fine to nominate your own, but use this opportunity to give some link luv to your favorite blog.

i have a forum running along with my blog , this helps me know what users want to read

It's amazing what little nuggets you pick up when you open your mind. Of course it's a good idea to sell water in the desert. How often we forget. But what to do when there are desert water vendors every 15 feet?
Who would have considered to check the comments to great posts? I suppose it is a good way to discover the niche of the niche.
Little ideas like this. It's sort of like the well known fact that all clever tricks are created by guys in jail who haven't got much else to do, like how to pick up a dime with a forklift. Of course, this presupposes that the inmate just also happens to have a forklift in the cell.
I guess everybody has a GREAT idea every so often. It's good to find places where they share them, and through backwards analytics, one could go one better by closely following the comments they generate. Interesting! I'm filing this one in the old gray lockbox. I'll sure give it a twirl when I'm researching.

Hi Tia,

Comment section may be a valuable source for finding topics for your blog. However, it's should be something struggling for new and start-up blog because it's hard to generate enough contributive comments during the first few months. I think the path for finding topics to write about is from your own knowledge/interest -> forum/other blog/social news -> comment -> ask your reader. Do you agree?

Hey Mike,

Yes I agree. But they can also try this: finding a comment that asks a question they know something about. Publish a post based on that comment, link to the original post (getting a back link and the blogger's attention), and then going back to that original post and leaving a comment luv back link answering that very same question.

Doing this once or twice a week would make a big difference in traffic and readership!

Looking for ideas in content is a great Idea and I had not really thought about that. Many commentators do have a lot of varied knowledge that can lead you into great ideas.

Also gaps in knowledge can let you know what they might be looking for.

Thanks for some great ideas!

It's great opportunity to introduce favorite blog. I have ten blogs in my RSS feed majority of which are on two topics, blogging and designing, but i like the most one is famousbloggers due to its content, community and diverse variety of information. You will find, motivation, personality, business and even design tips from good voices.

It's extremely true that you can find great content Ideas for your blog if you navigate the comment section on other blogs. But I do must say if you have to go that route, then that niche might not be for you..its best to write about things your knowledgeable about.

Thanks for this post Tia. Blog comments have been a great resource to me in getting article ideas. It really comes down to "giving people what they want." Comments can be of great help of understanding that concept...

Tia, this is too weird. I just did what you wrote about - posted a expansion to a comment on another blog. The subject of the comment is also my nominee for consistency in providing valuable and usable content: Ms. Ileane of BasicBlogTips.com.

She has given me more actionable advice in the past three months, including joining BloggerLuv and using Google Chrome. Sometimes, I gotta say, "no mas!" I have so much stuff to check out.

That was the fodder for my own post on BloggerLuv. So, yeah, that works for me :)

Cheers,

Mitch

Oh I completely agree. Ileane's blogs (both her old and new one) are great sources of very usable information. She gets an A+ from me. :)

Thanks for commenting!

Tia

Thanks, Abhishek! And thanks again for listing my blog among your 13 favorites. That was very special.

Cheers,
Tia

First of all, thanks for mentioning my name, Tia. It's always great to get that kind of trackback, plus I got a chance to visit your blog for the first time.

I think that's one of the biggest issues in blogging these days: too much talking, not enough value.

Here's a good read to check out: http://alexwhalley.com/.
And one more: http://bigredtomatocompany.co.uk/

Hope you find these blogs as interesting as I do.

Love your blog as well, Tia!

Ana Hoffman

Thanks, Ana! I love Alex's blog, too. I will have to check out the Big Red Tomato Company. Thanks so much for the link!

Part of the reason I subscribe to your feed and read your material religiously is because you always make me think about things that are valuable to my own business. You help make me better at what I do. That is the primary benefit I get from your posts. For some reason your writing just connects with me. I feel a little smarter and a little wiser after reading it. Even if it is something I already know and understand, you remind me about what things are important. How is that for honest comment feedback?

I agree you can learn an awful lot from comments on your blog as well as other blogs in your niche just as you have pointed out. In all honesty, your ability to comprehend what the market really wants and your ability to deliver that to them will ultimately determine how successful your blog is. Don't you think?

If someone else had written this post I would have nominated you. I have also been pleasantly surprised at the quality of information that Ana produces at her Traffic generation tips website TrafficGenerationCafe.com.

I have only recently discovered her material, but it is top notch. She knows her stuff.

Thanks for the compliment, Kathy! And sorry this ended up in SPAM. I may have to turn it off; so many comments have been getting trapped in the filter.

I agree - Traffic Generation Cafe is the kind of blog that I bookmark from time to time because I find myself working through the steps. It's totally usable information. I like it a lot.

lol I'm laughing at your post title in CommentLuv. I have to go read that now. Too funny (or maybe not. We'll see I guess!!! :))

Comments are definitely a magnificent way to get plenty of ideas for new posts. I'm doing a series right now and one of my readers mentioned that they wanted to hear about time management so guess what I'm going to right about next? Time management of course! Taking time to read through your comments and pull out bits of good information will go a long way.

As far as a favorite blog.. aww there are so many, I can't name just one. I love all of you guys' blogs. :-)

Awesome! So is waking up at 11 AM part of your time management strategy?

LOL just kidding. :)

Tia

Great Post Tia. Awesome stuff.
Most of my content ideas come from the blog comments and i think it's one of the best source to get content ideas.

And My Favorite blogger is Glen from ViperChill.

Thanks for sharing this great post :).

Hey Dev!

I love ViperChill. There's just something about Glen's writing style that is very catchy. He's really good.

Thanks for your comment as always :)

Tia

This is a really good point. This is definitely something I need to be pursuing more. You can learn a lot from the questions people are asking on blogs similar to your own. Thank you for this!

You're welcome, Dave! I like using comments as starting points for discussion. When I do, I never feel that I just published something that no one is going to care about. It's a very good feeling!

Hallo Tia,

Yes, the contents of comments are often very valuable sources of great new content / ideas ... and I'd just like to mention one favourite ( off the top of my head!)....

Danny Brown at http://dannybrown.me/
together with his social media charity initiative
!2 for 12k Challenge at http://12for12k.org/about/

I think of him as a real internet gem - and hope his work continues to expand and flourish.

Best wishes

Will

Hi Will!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing the link to Danny Brown's site!

Best wishes to you as well,
Tia

Finding content to write for your blog through comments, well... that's a neat ideal, I too sometime look out for comments that give me some ideal on what to write, although not all comment a written to have a question or problem, but I think... as you had said "If one person out there is talking about it, you can bet others are, too"
I'm not sure if my blog does give usable content but I'm sure most of my content are unique and interesting to read... that make sense to any smart minds out there.

And that is bringing value as well - writing about things that are unique and interesting to read. I'm sure your readers have come to expect that from you! Awesome.

Hi Tia,

I often talk about writing valued posts, now I will think about usable content instead. Thanks for sharing the reminder.

Marcus Baker runs a fine blog at http://www.marcus-baker.com/ It's network marketing and personal development themed site. My blog didn't take off until I applied what I learned from him.

Ryan Biddulph

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the link to Markus. I will have to check out the site.

There's something very viral about usable content - people love to share it. That's one of the most compelling reasons to sprinkle it in every now and then.
