Pet Blogging is Officially Here to Stay – Interview with Caren Gittleman

April 29, 2011

in Business

I have to admit, before I started using Twitter, I had no idea that people were blogging as their pets. It wasn’t until I got a DM from a mysterious someone who said that their mom really liked bizchickblogs. My first thought was, “Cool!” So I went and checked out their blog. It was then that I discovered that this mysterious someone was none other than a cat named Cody.

Caren Cat Chat

Caren of Cat Chat

So here I am, several months later, getting ready to chat with Cody’s (and now doggie Dakota’s) mom Caren Gittleman, an amazing pet blogger who was the first to introduce me to this blogging niche! Her pet blogs are Cat Chat With Cody & Caren and Dakota’s Den.

Check out our interview below! We are ALSO going to be chatting it up on bizchickchat LIVE this Monday at 12:30 ET on BlogTalkRadio. It’s going to be so much fun. Join us!

1. What gave you the idea to start blogging on behalf of your cat, Cody? And Dakota?

In a prior life I was in newspaper advertising for 21 years (in Cleveland, Ohio at The Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper). I moved to Michigan in 2001 (after meeting my husband online) where I had NINE jobs! Lost my last one in 2007 due to downsizing. I was incredibly depressed the first two years. I applied to job after job with no luck. Then, I answered an ad from a local newspaper in Michigan (The Oakland Press), they were seeking Citizen Journalists. I had always loved to write and thought maybe that would interest me. They were going to assign me to City Council meetings. Noooo way! Not for me!

I am a kind of a crazy person, I consider that to be waaay too boring. In the group workshop they had I learned that they had feature writers and online bloggers. I checked out their blogs and noticed they had a Dog Blog but nothing for cats. I asked them instead of covering City Council meetings, could I do a blog? They had me submit ideas, I submitted Cat Chat, also an idea for a food blog (I am a HUGE foodie), also Reality TV. They chose Cat Chat.

Listen in LIVE to “Do Pets Make Better Bloggers than People?” Monday on bizchickchat live!

Cat Chat was born October of 2009. I had no clue what I was doing. Dakota’s blog “Dakota’s Den” is less than a month old. People on my current blog were responding favorably when I would include photos of my Sheltie and I decided to start Dakota’s blog which sadly I am not keeping up on the way I should.

2. How did you promote your blog at first?

I didn’t. I had no clue what I was doing. I was not on Twitter at the time and was very “anti Twitter” (which changed in June 2010). I mostly promoted it on Facebook.

3. How has the promotion strategy changed over time?

The promotion strategy has changed drastically. I was blessed on October 5, 2010 by Blogger. I was awarded their “Blog Of Note” award which jumped my follower count immensely. In June of 2010 I joined Twitter and started learning my way around there. I created more than one Cat Chat page on Facebook (I lost some followers of those pages when I changed from a group to a page). Twitter was probably the most successful form of promoting my blog that I have used. I have connected with some amazing people there (like yourself). I also participated in Blog Hops (which I don’t do as much now because I am following so many blogs). I leave comments religiously on the majority of the blogs that I follow.

They look at me and either say “you have WHAT???” or their look conveys what they are thinking.

4. What is the usual reaction people have when you tell them you have blogs for your pets?

I have to say that sadly it isn’t favorable. They look at me and either say “you have WHAT???” or their look conveys what they are thinking. Most people look down on it. They think I am sitting and playing online all day which as you know is far from the truth. My family and close friends sadly are probably the LEAST supportive of anyone that knows that I have a blog. It is amazing how you can’t get your own family or friends to follow your blog. Some of them don’t understand what it is that I do. Some, just don’t care.

5. Are your blogs monetized? Do pet services/product companies approach you for sponsorship?

I am actively trying to make more money with my blog.

6. Anything else that you’d like to share?

I barely make any money (but would LOVE TO)… the first 6 months of my blog I was blogging for free. I wasn’t being paid. I would still do it for free (but I prefer not to lol)… I work harder blogging than I ever did on ANY traditional job I have ever had. Blogging doesn’t end. I am up as early as someone who has to go to an office (tradionally by 7am at the LATEST)… with social networking, reading other blogs, etc. I am often STILL UP at 1am.

I do book reviews on my blog, product reviews, etc. This all takes TIME. My husband is a retired teacher and money is tight for us (as it is for so many)… if there is anyone out there who would like to give a crazy cat lady pet writer (I can write about more than just pets, but I prefer humorous writing) I am ready, willing, able and AVAILABLE!!!. I also have a dream of writing a pet related humorous book, we will see.

Last thing, Tia I love the work that you do, I have been a follower of yours for a while now. I THANK YOU for noticing me and for affording me this opportunity of speaking with you! You have no idea how flattered I am!!!

Hilarious Video of Dakota and Cody’s… butt.

THANK YOU Caren! I cannot wait to chat about this on Monday’s bizchickchat LIVE!

P.S. I just got a cat. Should I give her a column on bizchickblogs? :)

This doesn’t surprise me, Tia. My mother calls their dog my brother. They feed him whatever they’re eating. He’s treated like a person. (Can you feel my eyes rolling?) The latest from my “brother” is a Facebook request from his account. I was not going to accept it, but received a call from my mother a few weeks after it was sent wondering when I was going to friend him. Yes, it doesn’t surprise me that pet blogging is here to stay. I’m just glad my “brother” hasn’t discovered blogging yet. ;)

I totally love Caren and her blogs. She is so generous, funny and personable. This was so refreshing after a snobby blogger really turned me off to reading ANY for a long time. When I saw CatChat on another cat blog it caught my eye and I have been hooked ever since. I am a total lover of all things cats and sharing the stories and humor and also helpful tips on these beloved creatures has been a great addition to my day as a busy and budgeted mom of three active boys. My chubby but lovable Calico Rosie, is one of my bestest and non-judgmental friends in this world and she gives Caren four paws up :D !!

Caren Gittleman May 3, 2011 at 7:04 am

Sue thank you! You are too kind! It is people like you that makes blogging worthwhile! thanks so much for your support!

Priscilla May 1, 2011 at 10:11 am

Great interview Caren and Tia!
I love Caren’s blogs a lot, she is a very warm and interesting lady, Cody is cute and Dakota is handsome! From her Cat Chat, I start to learn a lot about cats and I love reading the posts from Dakota too.
Keep the good work, Caren!!! Bravo!!!

Caren Gittleman May 3, 2011 at 7:06 am

Hi Priscilla!!! This comment means soooo much because Priscilla is a DOG LOVER! She has a fantastic blog herself about Eva The Sheltie…..Priscilla is one of my most constant supporters and it is most appreciated! Thank you!

Melanie Kissell @SoloMompreneur May 1, 2011 at 4:16 am

Thanks for a fabulous interview, Caren and Tia!

As you can see in my photo, I’m a pet lover and I can’t wait to go over and check out Cat Chat. I’ve only met one other pet blogger — Cathy Goodwin of Good Cat Marketing (dot) com. You may want to look her up, Caren. I think the two of you would love getting acquainted. Her expertise is writing copy for the web and she’s a doggone (excuse the pun) good blogger! And she holds weekly “Cat Chats”. :)

So glad I landed here today. Keep the good stuff coming our way, Tia!

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:34 am

thanks much! I popped over…

ann dziemianowicz April 30, 2011 at 8:32 pm

Tia, I enjoyed your interview with Caren. I’m a big fan of Cat Chat with Caren and Cody. Caren is one of the warmest bloggers out there. I love her! She always makes you feel welcome when you visit her blog. It’s like going to her home. She’s witty, generous and friendly. Plus she’s got the best sense of humor, hands down.

What I respect about Caren is that she takes the time to answer every comment. She values her audience. And she also visits the blogs of her followers. As a blogger she has a good understanding of how to provide excellent “customer service.” And her followers keep coming back.

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:29 am

Ann thank you sooooooooo much!! Your words flatter me beyond belief! Funny you said I answer every comment!! (except for the post I have up on Friday which is a give-away!) Didn’t want to have my comments in the mix….I will leave one for everyone at the end….now I feel guilty I didn’t respond to everyone! Thanks so much again!

Marquita Herald April 30, 2011 at 7:55 pm

I agree, I’ve been seeing pet blogs for awhile – in fact there are quite a few at Alltop – though most of them offer little more than cute pet photos. Not sure what the secret is, but I wish you all the best – I’m a dog lover myself … man, can’t imagine what my sassy little Lucy would do if she had a “voice!” Thanks, enjoyable article.

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:31 am

Marquita you would be amazed at the ENORMOUS success the blogs that feature “cute little photos” are having. Those who read pet blogs LOVE seeing the “cute little photos” more than anything!

"The Boys" and Karen April 30, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Great interview, Caren and Tia.

While you’ve already indicated your newspaper owns your blog, I do have to add that I hope at some point you can get your own blog – owned by you and hosted on your own host.

I do love keeping up with Cody, although like you, I sometimes can’t get around to all the cat blogs we enjoy. While I don’t write as “The Boys”, I do manage to keep their antics in the forefront on our cat blog. And in Mews Nooz, our cat newsletter.

I’m looking forward to your “radio gig” on Monday!

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:33 am

Hi Karen, the newspaper “houses” my blog….I own the content which is the most important part….thank you for yoru kind words!
Oh and Dakota’s blog is completely independent from the newspaper.

Fran Aslam From Online writer April 30, 2011 at 11:17 am

Hi Caren and Tia:

Pet blogging is popular for a long time. It is becoming more popular with time because now every household, has more than one pet. People are into technology. So they mobile search or computer search the information they need to use for their pet. More searches means people area ready to spend money on pet information. Naturally more people will blog. I agree with you and both.

Have a fun week end.

It is absolutely amazing how far pet blogging has come! From the famous ‘puppy cams,’ to the ‘I haz cheezburger,’ It would seem that blogging for pets is the way to go. Alas, I am allergic to cats…and work long hours so I cannot have a dog. Well, I can always buy a couple of fish. Great interview!

Ileane April 30, 2011 at 6:51 am

Hi Caren and Tia! I haven’t following any pets on Twitter recently but I might check these two out sometime. I hope their Tweets are as hilarious and their videos are :)

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:36 am

Hi Ileane, I am happy you liked the video!! lol. You should follow us! A lot of my tweets are sharing links of other bloggers (like yourself) who may write something that I love….would love to have you with us!

Slappy @ Slappy Bear April 30, 2011 at 5:08 am

What a brilliant idea, there are so many people in the world with pets these days that it’s nice to see the pets actually having their say for a change ;)

I think everyone should start a bog for their pets and show the world that we do love our pets and support them as well ;)

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:37 am

@Slappy Bear Nooooo!!! Don’t have every pet owner have a blog! Too much competition!! lol!!! (just kidding!!)

Dana @ Best Broadband Blog April 30, 2011 at 5:06 am

At first, I think what?!! A blog on behalf a pet. But after finish read it, I think it is an unique idea and will work around pet lovers. :D

Rob@Spokane web design April 29, 2011 at 9:44 pm

I think pets on twitter are more interesting than most people, at least you know some imagination is being used.

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:38 am

I agree! :)

redkathy April 29, 2011 at 8:52 pm

Oh boy I love the concept Tia! Caren has a great idea with the pet blogging thing. I mean our pets are part of the family and so important. We have my son’s dog now that he’s back to school in Tampa. No grandkids yet just my grandpuppy!!! See what I mean about the pets, part of the family :)

I feel her on the job thing BIG time. I’m still looking for night work and it is depressing!!

Can’t wait to hear the show on Monday ;)

Have a great weekend.

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:40 am

@redkathy start a blog about your dog! Come join us! I hope you find something soon….trust me, I know too well how you feel and what you are going through.

Snoopy April 29, 2011 at 8:41 pm

It was lots of fun to read this post.

When I first started writing my blog it didn’t occur to me to let my Mum write it instead of me. Well, what does she know about growing up as a puppy? :)

I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find lots of other pets who blog and the community is pawsome! Everyone is so friendly….. (Love Blogpaws too )

I love that pets chat to me on my comments too, it’s great to hear from humans as well of course :)

Great that Dakota’s also got his blog too, I’m off to go and visit him…..:)

Keep up the great work,

Snoopy :)

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:42 am

Hi Snoopy!! We love BlogPaws too!! Also…on the Cat Chat blog that one is mostly done in my voice (Cody occasionally contributes!) Dakota’s blog is soley his voice :)
we love the pet blogging community as well! Great bunch of people!

Brankica@puppy diary April 29, 2011 at 8:32 pm

Lol, I have a blog for my puppy I started when I got her, about 4 months ago. But I started it when my blog was growing fast in short period of time and I wrote a little bit. I do plan to work more on it just because my puppy deserves it :)

And I am actually gonna build my first link by attaching it here, I know Tia won’t mind.

This post is awesome!

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:43 am

on my way to check out your blog now!!!

Tia Peterson April 29, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Hi Caren – These are such great answers and I can’t wait until the live interview.

As far as monetization goes, so much goes into it. As pet blogging grows, I can imagine that there will be more sponsorship opportunities. Keep growing the traffic. You really should get a hosting package with HostGator and then host both your blogs on it, along with your own domain names. If you do that, I will customize two Wordpress themes for you for free – one for each blog; I would like to see you succeed.

Sometimes, sponsors want to see that you are really dedicated and that means owning your blog on a server and having a domain name that is yours to keep (it’s the little things).

You’re doing a great job. Give Dakota & Cody some luv for me!

Caren Gittleman April 29, 2011 at 7:34 pm

Tia that is fabulous advice but we definitely have to talk one-on-one about that one! The newspaper that sponsors me “houses” my blog Cat Chat….you are the third person who has told me I need to move it and own my own link….I may have to give it some serious thought.

I am so excited that I will be a part of your show on Monday! I am excited, flattered, elated, nervous, honored….did I make my point???? lol

I THANK YOU!!!

BodynSoil April 29, 2011 at 3:16 pm

When you first started to tell your story, regarding how you came about your cat blog I thought you would say it was due to wanting to keep your professional life separate from your private one. Blogging as your pet would also be a nice way to remain anonymous and still be able to speak your mind. I too am a freshman blogger and have been learning a lot about the process in the last few month. I am so happy that you have had success and wish you the best of luck getting your convention, hopefully with sponsorship.

Not only have I seen people blogging as their pets but also blogging as their stuffed animals so don’t be shy about blogging as your cat or dog.

Caren Gittleman May 1, 2011 at 8:44 am

thank you!!!!
