A New Way To Manage Twitter & Facebook When You’re Away

July 17, 2011 · 17 comments

Taking a Break iphone AppAt some point, we all have to take a break. Whether it’s for a day or a week or longer, it’s good to get away from work and the daily routine, and just recharge. Sometimes, travel requires you to be away from work or marketing for a day or two, also. When you go away, you usually set up an auto-responder for your email account to make sure people know that you’re gone and not just ignoring their messages.

But what do you do with Twitter and Facebook while you’re away? Hire someone just for the week to manage your account? Probably not. You could leave a single status update that you’ll be back after awhile, but people forget about you pretty quickly in social channels. Or, they forget that you said you were gone. Status updates don’t stick around for very long in your followers’ pipelines.

You could leave everything be, and risk people getting annoyed that they asked you a question and you ignored them. That would be very bad. Or, you could keep up with your social networks on vacay, but maybe it’d be better to focus on having fun and relaxing.

Taking a Break: An iphone app that acts as your away message for Twitter & Facebook

Released just this past week, the Taking a Break app allows users to schedule breaks from Facebook and Twitter, and it politely sends auto replies to all incoming communications on behalf of the user. As the creators suggest, Taking a Break “introduces a new standard in social networking etiquette.”

While there are auto-DMs and auto-replies that people use right now for Twitter, they are generally frowned upon. But sending a message that you are away and will respond when you return is actually desirable, rather than fake. If you really are gone, you have a good reason to auto-reply. But if you’re still around and just lazy, that’s a different story!

Who Can Benefit

Everyone. If you value your relationships with fans and followers, why not be able to leave while still replying to them as a courtesy? This is especially useful for customer service departments during holidays or long weekends, or anyone else who actively connects with customers on social media and wouldn’t want them to misinterpret non-response as neglect.

Limits

This app is available for iphone only right now, so those of us with Blackberrys or Droids will have to wait. :) It would also be nice to see this as a desktop application, because as more and more businesses integrate social media into customer outreach and customer service, there will be a number of people using social media for business right there at their desk. Social media is not just for mobiles.

Where to Get It

Taking a Break became available in the Apple App Store on July 14, 2011, for $0.99. Click here to download it.

If you have questions about the app, leave them here and I’ll notify them to come and respond to your questions!

If you mean you want to schedule status updates for when you are on break, such that different status updates will post automatically on different days (according to a schedule you set in advance), then we do not have this feature in the app. But that sounds interesting, though it serves a different purpose than “Taking a Break.” We will consider this feature, if we feel there will be enough users who would be interested in using it.Nonetheless, in the current version of our Taking a Break app, you can set a status update message that you want to post when your break begins, or for any date in the future—only one status update, however.

Love it! The 1 question I have is can you “schedule” status updates, not just an auto response. Much like you can do with Hootsuite or Tweetdeck. If I can do that, I am all in. Anyone know? I have looked on iTunes but saw nothing.

@RichieB Ah, no worries, always helpful to know so we can make our product better.

BTW, great product. I’ll have to install it on my iPhone and check it out…and go on a vacation! :)

It is about time! Ha ha. How funny nobody came up with this one before. At least I did not see. There are many that will auto respond DM’s but not simple messages.

I’m rarely pay for apps but this would be worth it.

I’m surprised they didn’t release a desktop version. In many occasions I can just check my Twitter account while away, maybe not vacation or honeymoon but in many cases I can.

I’ll be checking this one out. Thx for the info.

@jennalanger @Tia Peterson I am sorry about that; I did copy and paste, and evidently I did not look at my post afterwards :(

I deleted the post and reposted, so the extra HTML code is gone now. And I added a follow up about the Blackberry and the desktop versions of Taking a Break.

What a wonderful article, Tia. Thank you very much for covering the app; it is indeed very useful and a first-of-its-kind app to manage Facebook and Twitter when you are unavailable.

The Android version of Taking a Break will be available in about 7 weeks. Unfortunately, we have no plans to make a BlackBerry version.

We have received a number of requests from a desktop app, but there is no plans as of now to make the desktop version. If the demand continues, we may not have a choice, however :)

@Tia Peterson @RichieB Hey Richie, did you copy and paste this comment into the box before posting? Feel free to send us an email at support at livefyre dot com so we can make sure this doesn’t happen again. Thanks!

@undertheumbrellanetwork Me, too. I want a desktop version of this.

@RichieB Not sure what happened with all the html formatting here! What do you think? Were you leaving a comment from your iphone? I want to find out so we can see if there’s an issue with LiveFyre or not.

@janesheeba Hi Jane – It does. I think it’s a great idea. I would like a Blackberry version so I can test the options. I would only want it to reply by DM. I would think that replying to all mentions on Twitter or comments on Facebook could get pretty annoying to the rest of the fans!

@Mywritingworld You’re welcome, Fran!

Ha… sounds like a promising app. I’m a droid gal and am awaiting the release of Droid version :) Feels great to be connected even when we are away :)

This is great information that every one can use. It is available 24 hours, as long as you are awake. Instant reply. But then again only iphone have this feature.

Thanks for this information
