Italian Sausage Burger with Apple Bacon BBQ Relish

Burgers
- Johnsonville Mild Italian Sausage Burgers (do not thaw)
- Whole wheat hamburger buns
Relish (measurements are not exact)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped Granny Smith raw apple (peeled)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper
- 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh garlic
- 1/2 cup chopped crispy bacon
- 2-3 tbsp hickory flavored BBQ sauce (I used Kraft)
- salt and pepper to taste
Optional
- Grilled pineapple as a side
- Grilled sliced red pepper for the burger
Directions
- Grill burgers according to package directions. Make sure the internal temperature of the meat is 160 degrees or higher.
- Combine relish ingredients in a small bowl. Taste. Add salt & pepper as desired.
- Top burger with two heaping spoonfuls of relish and a slice of grilled red pepper.
- Enjoy the burger with some grilled pineapple.
Eat this burger slowly because the flavors of everything from the meat to the relish are really intense and you don’t want to get heartburn.
Then, brush your teeth before getting too close to anyone.

I would have never thought of apples on a burger… but seeing the pic does make it look very appealing so I would definitely eat it-and savor the great taste.

@MegEtheridgeTorrie LOL Exactly. I made three burgers and gave two away since Aidan doesn’t eat anything good. If I lived nearer to you and Paul you could have been taste testers!
Looks like you created a wholesome combination of Sweet and Savory in a wheat bun with a fresh grilled fruit treat on the side! NEXT TIME – I REALLY think you need to have a “Fan” like me go over and Test taste it! I mean….. It’s my civic duty right??? Ha ha ha ha ~
I would totally eat that! It looks awesome! I thought of 3 different burgers I wanted to make but I wonder if it’s only TOPPINGS? Can I add to the meat itself? I can’t find anything saying either way in the find print? I don’t want to submit something thats not eligible? eeek – I already mixed stuff with my patties….. We’ll see… Pics to come!
@Tia Peterson @BelaVizy lol! You should add Tums’ as the other side dish – lol
@Tia Peterson You know back home I worked in an Italian restaurant. When I was scheduled to open, I made an Italian sausage burgers with egg and cheese for breakfast. Of course back then I had to remove the casing from a sausage and make the sausage patty. Johnsonville has a good idea with these.
@keepupweb Yes, that’s exactly how my mom likes them too. I guess that must be the New England style!
These burgers are so good, lol.
@Red Kathy Thanks, Kathy!! I would have used banana peppers too – or maybe just added them as an extra topping. I love banana peppers. The raw garlic definitely made this a little spicy!
@BelaVizy Hey Bela! lol I would eat this slowly if I were you. I gave myself some serious heartburn today.
You can definitely find them at Super Walmart. I’m not sure if they are in any other stores yet.
I’ll will follow your instructions except one: I don’t think I’ll be able to eat this slowly …
I didn’t know Johnsonville makes burger patties. At least I haven’t seen it here in VA yet.
I would totally love this burger Tia. Nice job on the foodie creativity! My twist to your recipe would be using banana peppers instead of green bell in the relish, you know I like the spicy stuff!
Oh and I have to tell you, the grilled pineapples are a nice pairing with the burger
OK. I’m officially hungry! This looks like a great recipe Tia. I’m definitely going to try it. I like sweet Italian sausage and my husband like the hot Italian. I usually grill kabobs with sausages, beef and veggies and serve them on a roll. This looks like a great alternative.
