For those of you who wanted a feature similar to CommentLuv, that would display a link to your latest post in your LiveFyre comments, you got it. LiveFyre has implemented a new feature called LinkBack.
Now, when you leave a comment on bizchickblogs AND you have added your blog URL to your LiveFyre account, a link to your latest post will display automagically.
(See image at the end of this post)
At the moment, this feature is available to bloggers who have LiveFyre installed on their blogs. LiveFyre is working to support other scenarios but that is the way it works at the moment. (Yet another reason to switch to LiveFyre, maybe?)
Site Owner Notes
Site owners can control this new setting – so if you’ve had LiveFyre installed on your blog for longer than a week, you need to go back to LiveFyre and activate this setting (details here). This is automatically turned on for new installations.
Blogger Notes
You can control whether or not your latest post is displayed from Site Settings in LiveFyre. That way, if you have a blog on your website that is perhapts not completely set up and Hello World! is still your latest post, you can turn this feature off.
You cannot control this on a blog by blog basis to my knowledge, though. It’s either on for all blogs that have LinkBack enabled, or off. The link goes back to your latest post.
If the LiveFyre blog you’re visiting doesn’t have this feature turned on, you won’t be able to leave a link back.
A Way to Give Back and Limit Trolls & Spammers and Encourage Better Convo
It appears that LiveFyre is even more of a full package commenting system now than it was before. I really like the simplicity of the way this new LinkBack feature works. There’s no extra checkbox to make your site look strange to people who are not familiar with blogging or names of plugins, so that’s good. And, it’s a way to give back to your readers who are also bloggers. However, you don’t get to choose which post you want to link back to OR which site gets the LinkBack opportunity (of the two you get to add to your LiveFyre profile). Still, sometimes simple is better.
What do you think?

Great article, @Tia Peterson !
I’m not sure when livefyre added the LinkBack feature, but as soon as I found out, I made the switch from CommentLuv. Then they added SocialSync on top of that and I’m here to stay.
I’m just waiting for the “guest commenting” feature to be released, as I’ve heard a few people say that they won’t comment unless they can do so anonymously.
By the way, this is the first time for me to visit your blog and I’ll definitely be back!
Todd
This is a pretty neat feature, I am seriously looking at putting Livefyre in on DragonBlogger.com in the next few days and already testing it in my sandbox. I am just tired of too much spam moderation.
this one seems to be a really cool feature..
Hi @Tia Peterson , I’m a little confused by this new feature. Do I need to install the livefyre plugin on my blog in order to get a link to one post on another blog with livefyre? Will the livefyre plugin override CommentLuv or do I need to have two commenting plugins just to get one link? Thanks for the heads up on this. I was waiting for that feature but I had no idea it was released. I wonder why I didn’t get an email from livefyre.
@aguswgs Good luck. I don’t do much Facebook integration. Definitely post your experiences!
@Bartjan Right. Recently, I saw it link to an attachment – a photo, actually. So I have no idea what that was all about and I hope it gets resolved.
@Luke Zemiden Sorry for the serious delay in moderating your comment, Luke. I thought I approved it already!
Looks like your link showed up.
Saw Livefyre on one website the other day and I was impressed by it and planned on trying it out. After reading your post, I’m more convinced to try it out. I’ve tried Disqus and IntenseDebate in the past but experienced a few issues one was with the Facebook API. Will post another comment and share my experience once I’ve tried Livefyre.
Only issue I had so far is that it automatically links to the newest page. Even if it is not a post or even if it is from another author.
@jennalanger Agreed, although the fact that links are gained adds a bit of encouragement as well. I still think dialogue is more important though.
Am just commenting cos am excited about the new platform
And i want to see if my link will show up (little kid)
@Tia Peterson@Brankica@jennalanger Spot on Brankica, Tia. Commenting on blogs to add value and participating in a discussion is what it is all about. I am really tired of people writing about building backlinks through commenting.. I think this is why there are those who are still it for the link. Either way, those links are no longer that valuable as it used to be. Natural links are and one of the ways I choose to reward people with links, is by linking to them on my posts when appropriate and my weekly roundups. Another rant
@Brankica@jennalanger@DiTesco You are 100% right on, Brankica. My rule of thumb is to write for my non-vocal readers, rather than my vocal ones.
I just write from the gut and no longer think about “giving back” because the content is free and that is the giveaway to begin with, right!? The content IS the give back. It is what matters.
@jennalanger@Tia Peterson@DiTesco I agree and that was the main reason I installed Livefyre on my blog.
Then I saw people commenting how they will never leave a comment on my blog because of that. I though “Who cares about you, if you are leaving comment for a link, get away from my blog”.
Those people are the ones that caused my blog not to have any cool comment plugins after I came back from LF. I removed both CommentLuv (and this is also because of the local registration and other changes in CL) and removed Keyword Luv.
You see my blog was always nofollow, even my CL links were nofollow. But people assumed they are do follow and kept commenting like crazy. They are nowhere to be found now on my blog. I have enough brains to figure out why. Do I care?? Not really, because if you are there for links, I don’t need you.
Bottom line, if you are counting on comments only to build backlinks to your blog, you should probably stop blogging. I do have thousands of backlinks from comments BUT I also have piles and piles and piles of links because people like me and my posts enough to link from their posts and blogrolls.
Yes, I figured that out but not sure how will this be accepted among bloggers. If the goal was to get more of them to install LF I understand it, but knowing the blog crowd, people are probably just going to be annoyed with the possibility for some to attach links and others not to. I don’t care much about the links themselves, if I get them – great, if I don’t I don’t care, I comment for the sake of networking and showing people I read their stuff, but I think that this might backfire in the sense, either it should have been left as it was, or pull the posts like Comment Luv does… Just thinking out loud… You know the reason why I removed LF off my blog and I am still considering bringing it back when it has all the stuff I need.
@Tia Peterson@DiTesco@Brankica Great point. In the end, why are people leaving comments on your blog? I should be to add insight and value to the conversation, not just for the link.
@Tia Peterson@Brankica Hi Brankica, we are pulling your last Livefyre conversation, so our system doesn’t know about posts you have made after you turned it off. Thanks for the feedback!
@DiTesco@Brankica Ah… You know what’s interesting to me is that there’s this whole crowd of people who comment on major sites like NYTimes and Gawker and LA Times and stuff like that, and there is a bit of registration process but not much. And they don’t seem to mind. And those are almost always nofollow. But the readers are loyal.
But then there is the blogger crowd and they don’t like registration and nofollow and if you do something that doesn’t benefit them directly, they take off and find somewhere else to chat. It makes me wonder whether or not the comments really are truly just for themselves.
@Brankica Wow that is bizarre! Cc’ing @jennalanger so maybe this can be added to the bug list.
@Brankica@Tia Peterson Yeah! I noticed that too. I think that some people got ticked off because of the registration issue and that links can now be set to “nofollow” by default. Also, there are some that had featured links which no longer work, so that could have been some downsides..
@Tia Peterson@DiTesco The funny part is that I see way less blogs with CommentLuv installed since it was updated and new settings were implemented, where you actually host registrations on your own blog.
I noticed this recently and saw one thing that was funny to me. Since I had Livefyre on my blog and then removed it, my link that is being pulled up is always the last post I had on my blog when I had Livefyre installed. I hope they will work around this and allow everyone to use the link feature.
@jennalanger@Gera Thanks for clarifying! I’ll be sure to update my post so it doesn’t cause confusion!
@Gera@Tia Peterson We’re working on supporting other blogging platforms. We also just launched this feature and we’re looking for ways to make it better, thanks for your feedback!
@jennalanger@Tia Peterson
You’d try to allow links no matter the blog and what if I’ve a blog on blogger or typepad or have disqus already installed…?
I don’t think is a good idea, I have had unpleasant surprises with external comment system and I prefer to play in safe arena by the moment.
It doesn’t matter – I don’t comment on other blogs just for links
@Tia Peterson@Gera Hi Gera, Jenna from Livefyre here. You need to have Livefyre installed on your site in order for it to display your last conversation. Super simple to install on a WordPress Blog
@DiTesco Yep. It’s happening with Gera’s too.
@Gera Me, either. Will notify livefyre. Not sure why yours and DiTesco’s posts aren’t showing.
@Gera Me, either. Maybe @jennalanger can weigh in?
@Tia Peterson I went over there to check my settings and it was already on.. Not sure why it is not working. Oh well, no worries… perhaps some small glitch that will soon be fixed
I’m not seeing a link back to my blog with the latest post….
Great to see a similar idea of Comluv added to the LiveFyre!
Of all the comments I’m seeing till now, only one has a link back, is this normal?
I’ve added my blog to settings since I obtained an account with LiveFyre.
@jkretch@richescornerlivefyre Great news, Jordan! Thanks.
@DiTesco@TrafficColeman P.S. I’m realizing that your latest post didn’t pop up. You might need to go to livefyre > settings > sites and make sure that the box is checked that you want your latest post to be displayed.
@DiTesco@TrafficColeman Hopefully he’s taking it okay. It’s really good to have competition in the marketplace. I think diehard ComLuv users will stay that way and he has nothing to worry about. The leap to LiveFyre is a huge one!
@Tia Peterson@richescorner Hey Tia and Rich, Jordan from livefyre here. We will be releasing a guest commenting feature very soon, and it will be OFF by default for all bloggers. And you will always have the option of whether you’d like to turn it on, or leave it off. We hope that it will lower the barrier for users to comment on blogs that want it, but it definitely won’t be for everybody.
Also, the “edit comment” feature is coming, so no more having to correct your typos in a follow up comment
I agree with @TrafficColeman Tia, it was just a matter of time until someone came up with a system, similar to that of “comluv”.. Wonder how Andy is taking this
@richescorner@livefyre I meant to write, ‘They “are” not they “is.”‘
@TrafficColeman LOL Well I think it was more that they responded to several blogger suggestions that this feature be added.
@richescornerHey Rich! That definitely seems to be the one thing bloggers take issue with. As my blog started to get more and more human spam (especially because this is a dofollow blog), I decided that an account would be great. Readers can still comment with Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, but they won’t get the benefit of the link back.
I believe they (LiveFyre) is thinking about a “Guest” comment option. I hope it’s something that bloggers can decide to enable or disable. That would be a suitable implementation, I think.
Thanks for your comment! @livefyre @jkretch
This is a really good feature to have, although it would be nice to be able to select which posts you’d like to link. I would say that’s not a make or break feature, but it would be nice to have. The only other issue I have with livefyre is that they require creating an account in order to leave a comment. I’d really like it if they allowed people to post a comment without requiring a livefyre account.
I knew someone will be doing this soon..they couldn’t set around and watch commentluv have all the fun.
