Easy Fixes for Slow Computers: 3. Defragment your hard disk drive.

defragment hard disk drive

I used to make a habit of doing this. Defragmenting your hard disk drive cleans up the space that fragmented data takes up. It should be done on a regular basis as it can significantly improve performance.

What is fragmentation? I’m not a techie, and this is the best definition I found:

Fragmentation¬†describes the condition of your hard disk drive when files are divided into pieces and scattered around the disk. Fragmentation occurs naturally when you use a disk frequently, just by doing basic tasks like creating, deleting and modifying files.” (Source: Webopedia.com)

Microsoft.com features a helpful video and step-by-step instructions for how to defragment your hard disk here.

Yip – Increasing Ram (even Virtual Ram) is one of the basic things that will help a computer with resource problems.

Thanks for sharing the great post and tips.

Ha-ha, Apple, right :D.
Except the great tips above I will also add freeing as much as possible space in the hard drive and also performing registry fixing from time to time. For example you can use the program CCleaner. Another tip is to clear the cache form the browser, this will make browsing much faster if you had a big cache piled up over time.
Regards.
